so, as one would expect, my schedule is much like my ladyfriend's...only with less humor and more sarcasm. so, in pictures and words, here it is: a day in the life of an inner-city high school english teacher.
the alarm won't actually go off until 4:15...but circadian rhythms and common courtesy compel me to get up before it goes off.
i have the most comfortable bed...ever. and i bet it's pretty safe with this guy watching over me.
i read the news, journal, read, and catch up on writing letters. but once that clock hits 4:52, i need to grab my somewhat stinky sneakers,
and head out....
...to the ymca about 1/2 mile away.
so i can "run" for a couple miles, and then bike 6 or 7 (at least i'm good at that). i love the gym in the morning - i read my books, watch the morning news, and talk to old people. they, and businessmen who always dreamed they were going to be professional football players, are the only ones in the gym at 5 in the morning.
i leave the y by 5:55, head home, just in time to turn the shower on at 6, get in at 6:03 (it takes a while in the morning to heat up), and be out by 6:15. i'm a tall drink of water...it takes a while to shower.
leave the house by 7 (and maybe run to the market to get snacks to counter-balance the workout)
get to school by 7:10 to get life-changing information from moody until 7:30...
get to my room and play around until i hear the most angelic voice on this earth.
try to kill the time with my homeroom, who we get to hold EVERY SINGLE DAY from 7:45 until 8:40.
suffer through first block (8:45-10:00), which, on both days, is much more class management. on A days it's my class of 18, 19, and 20 year-olds who are retaking the test for the...whatever time. they just want to know what they have to know for the class, they want to just...be there. they're not really social butterflies, just completely clueless about the world. B days it's a lot of angry girls and boys who are embarrassed that they're poor. and everyone in that class, sans four of five students, is a dealer.
passing period, which makes me giggle. to see the students, to think about the community, to be able to see ms. thomas...it's like coming up for air in the middle of a "bet you can't hold your breath for 7 minutes" contest.
second block - 10:05-11:40. both days these kids are good. they participate, come to class, and are generally good-natured. they help me exercise the "silent classroom" of my master. (though the video is only 27 seconds, they were completely silent for 17 minutes today during independent work...niiiiiice)
HEAVEN, aka third block. i have the time from 11:45 to 1:45 to myself every day. uhhh, that is if it's not interrupted with professional development, surprise parent conferences, meetings with administrators, sneaking over to the gym to get candy, helping some students with make-up work, or any other number of crazy things. but on A days i get to have heart-to-hearts with ko-pank and B days allow me to kick back and relax with ms. thomas.
fourth block...stresses me out a little bit, both days. the numbers for inclusion kids, kids over 18, repeaters, and re-testers for those two blocks are insane. i don't like the composition of either of those classes, so i'm not gonna talk about it.
3:40 - school is done, and i'm packing up, out the door by 3:50. i don't take stuff home to grade. i try not to take any of my work home. it's a little easier at my school since all of our copies, tests, and worksheets have to be turned in a week or so ahead, so i'm usually planned out pretty thoroughly.
4:00 - snack time. necessary. then back out to avoid the house for as long as possible.
sushi, swimming, coffee, bookstore, church events, dinner with friends, drinks with co-workers, sports events, checking out local shops, walking/talking, reading in random locations and general tomfoolery follows my departure from work until about 6 or 7.
i come home, get into some jammers, and bum out to some arrested development, simpsons, lipstick jungle (thanks brah), grey's, or desperate housewives. when i start to knock out (usuall around 8:15), i pick up a book, read for a while, then turn off the light and play a couple games of bubble breaker or solitaire on my phone.
that means i'm out hard-core by 9.30. and that's my life.
sooooo, i've got that going for me.
